Pterinochilus murinus - OBT Usambara (6-7cm)
The Usambara OBT is a seriously striking form of Pterinochilus murinus, originating from the Usambara Mountains of Tanzania. They develop gorgeous orange and golden colouring and are absolutely brilliant webbers, often creating a huge silk fortress throughout their enclosure. They can reach around 14-16cm as adults and have a medium to fast growth rate. They’re a terrestrial species that appreciates a good depth of substrate, a hide and plenty of anchor points for webbing. Keep them around 24–28°C, with humidity around 60–70%, a water dish and good ventilation. The enclosure can be kept predominantly dry, which suits this species perfectly. They've rather amusingly adopted the nickname “Orange Bitey Thing”, so clearly someone had a sense of humour when naming them! 😂 They can put on an impressive threat display when they feel bothered, but give them the space and respect they deserve and you'll rarely see it. A seriously entertaining spider to watch settle in and turn its enclosure into a webbed-up masterpiece. If you like your tarantulas with colour, character and a ridiculous amount of webbing, this one is definitely worth a look.
