Harpactira pulchripes - Golden Blue Leg Baboon (3-4cm)
The Golden Blue Leg Baboon is one of those spiders where you look at the name, look at the spider and think… yep, they weren't exactly struggling for inspiration. 😂
Native to South Africa, this is a seriously gorgeous Old World species, with a golden carapace, striking blue legs and plenty of attitude packed into a relatively small package. They reach around 12–14cm as adults and have a medium growth rate.
They’re terrestrial/fossorial, so give them a good depth of substrate to dig into, along with a secure hide, water dish and plenty of floor space. Keep them around 22–28°C with humidity around 50–65%, keeping the enclosure predominantly on the drier side with good ventilation.
For a baboon spider, H. pulchripes is often considered one of the more laid-back options, although “laid-back” is very much relative when you're dealing with an Old World tarantula. They’re still quick and can be defensive if they feel threatened, so this is one for a keeper who knows what they're doing rather than someone looking for their first spider.
Basically, gorgeous, blue, golden and slightly unhinged. What more could you want? 😂
